Team Alberta's Success at the Canada Summer Games

 

Team Alberta wraps up a successful Canada Summer Games

 

Province finishes fourth overall in medals and flag points

 

Edmonton... Team Alberta completed the 2009 Canada Summer Games on a solid note by finishing fourth overall in medals and flagpoints.  The Games were held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island from August 15 to 29.

 

Alberta finished with 76 medals: 20 gold, 31 silver and 25 bronze.  In addition, Alberta finished fourth overall with 212.5 flagpoints.  Flagpoints are awarded to provinces based on the performance and participation of every athlete in every sport. 

 

"Congratulations to the mission team led by Scott Fraser, Chef de Mission and the 450 athletes, coaches, artists and staff who represented Alberta so well at the Games," said Cindy Ady, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation.  "Albertans are extremely proud of all of our participants whose efforts and performances contributed to the success of the Games.  Thank you to all the families and friends of each participant whose continued support made this possible.

 

Calgary's Sam Effah was selected to be the Alberta flagbearer for the closing ceremonies.  Effah earned gold and a new Canada Games record in the 200 metre race, gold in the 4 x 100 relay and silver in the 4 x 400 relay.  A week before the Games, Effah represented Canada and raced against world record holder, Usain Bolt, in the 200 metre final at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Berlin.

 

Other Games highlights for Team Alberta include 31 medals from the swim team, 15 medals from the athletics team,14 medals from the wrestling team and many other impressive results.  Overall, Alberta's teams combined to win the most medals ever in their Canada Summer Games history.

Team Alberta's involvement in the Games is coordinated by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, a non-profit Crown corporation supported by the Alberta Lottery Fund.  The foundation provides support for participation in sport, recreation and physical activity, athletic excellence and the preservation and recreational use of natural environments in Alberta.  Through the foundation, the Alberta government has provided $1.5 million towards team training, the selection of teams and the operations of Team Alberta.
